Day 1: Thursday, April 29, 2010

Depart your home city this morning for Memphis.  Upon arrival our first visit will be to Elvis Presley's Graceland.  After lunch at your choice of Graceland restaurants, see the mansion home, Elvis's enormous collection of gold records, his stage costumes, jewelry and many other exhibits.  Check into the Marriott Downtown hotel before the welcome dinner at Rendezvous Famous BBQ.  After dinner tonight you may choose to go explore world famous Beale Street, home of the blues!! (D)    Accommodations at the Marriott Downtown Memphis             

 

Day 2: Friday, April 30, 2010

Depart this morning for an extensive visit to the National Civil Rights Museum.  Located at the assassination site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the museum pays tribute to the entire civil rights movement.  After lunch on your own, we will board a riverboat for a site-seeing cruise on the mighty Mississippi River.  The remainder of the evening is at your leisure. Day 3:  Saturday, May 1, 2010

After breakfast at the hotel, visit the legendary Sun Studios the “birthplace of Rock n' Roll”.  This is sure to put you in the mood for the Beale Street Music Festival later this afternoon.  Offering a wide range of musical performances, there is sure to be something for everyone. Day 4: Sunday, May 2, 2010

After checking out, depart mid morning for the Peabody Hotel.  See the ducks make their traditional march to the lobby fountain before enjoying brunch at the famous Peabody Hotel.  Spend the afternoon touring Stax Museum of American Soul Music.  Transfer to the airport to check-in for your flight.  Arrive home later this evening.  (B,BR)

What to Expect

Morris Murdock will handle most of the tour preparations for you, however there are still a few things you should know and some details to take care of to ensure your comfort, safety and peace of mind.  Please review the information below to ensure that any surprises along the way will only be pleasant ones. 

 

Airline Information

Group Air Tickets

A group flight is offered in connection with this tour.  Tickets will be issued approximately 30 days prior to departure.  Electronic tickets will be issued where possible.  The group schedule is listed below:

 

April 29, 2010    Delta 958         Depart Salt Lake City at 8:40AM

April 29, 2010                           Arrive Memphis at 12:48PM

 

May 2, 2010      Delta 959         Depart Memphis at 6:35 PM

May 2, 2010                             Arrive Salt Lake City at 9:00 PM

 

 

The cost for this flight is approx $504.00 round trip and is subject to change until ticketed.

 

Air Tickets Purchased Independently of the Tour
If you live outside of Salt Lake City, please contact us for assistance in making individual airline reservations to and from your home city, or you may purchase tickets on your own.  Please plan your arrival and departure times to coincide with the above group flight times

 

We urge you to check airline cancellation penalties before purchasing airline tickets since departure times and flights can change. Tours may also be cancelled due to low enrollments. Morris Murdock Escorted Tours does not accept liability for cancellation penalties related to domestic or international airline tickets purchased independently in conjunction with a tour. We recommend that you check with us prior to purchasing any airline tickets.

 

Seat Assignments:

We understand that your seat assignment is an important part of your tour experience.  Each airline has a different policy regarding pre-assigned seat assignments and we are bound by their rules.  Morris Murdock Escorted Tours will advise the airlines of your seating preference and will do all possible to secure your seat request.  Please understand that in cases where pre-assigned seats are not available, seats will be assigned at the airport.  We recommend arriving at the airport early to ensure the best seat selection.

 

Frequent Flyers:

We will be happy to add your frequent flyer number to any airline reservation created by Morris Murdock Escorted Tours.  Please understand that we are unable to assist with securing reservations for free or reduced cost frequent flyer tickets.  Please contact your individual airline for assistance.

Airline seat assignments and flight schedules are subject to change without notice.

Baggage

Most airlines now charge additional fees for checking bags.  These charges are not included in the tour price and are the traveler's responsibility.  Baggage handling is included in the tour price.

 

Transfers

The motor coach will be at the Memphis airport at 1:00 PM on April 29 to meet those arriving on the group flight.  If you are making your own air arrangements, please be at the baggage claim area for Delta # 958 to meet up with the group. 

 

For the return transfer, the coach will arrive at the airport approximately 4:30 PM.  Please schedule your return flight for no earlier than 6:00 PM on May 2.

Hotel Information:

Overlooking the mighty Mississippi River, your hotel while on tour will be the Memphis Marriott Downtown.  Located in the heart of Memphis you are just minutes away from Beale Street, Mud Island and the Pyramid.

Packing and Clothing Suggestions

Your days on tour will mostly consist of walking, standing, and getting on and off the coach.  Please dress in casual clothing that can be easily layered for a change in temperature.  Comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles are a must. You may want to bring a jacket for the evening.

 

It is also advisable to pack a change of clothing in your carry-on bag in case your checked luggage goes astray. 

 

The airlines allow only limited amount of liquids in your carry on luggage.  You should plan to follow the 3-1-1 rule which allows a maximum of 3.4 ounces of liquid; 1 quart sized plastic zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger.  Please see http://www.tsa.gov/311 for details.

 

Communication

Internet service is available in your hotel.  Please check with your cell-phone provider for information on roaming charges.

Fr. Susan Cottler - Westminster Professor

Westminster Alumni Memphis BBQ, Blues and Civil Rights Tour

Dr. Susan Cottler is chair/professor of the Westminster College History Department. She has taught courses on American and Russian history, popular culture, the history of rock and roll, rhythm and blues and the civil rights movement at Westminster for 32 years. She has produced two short films on Memphis and is an expert on all-things Elvis. She has previously led May Term trips to Memphis and New Orleans. A native of New England, Dr. Cottler received a bachelor’s from the University of Vermont before moving to the Beehive State to pursue and master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Utah.
